What is the Thyroid Imbalance

What is the Thyroid Imbalance and When do you Need to Take a TSH Test?

TSH stands for Thyroid-stimulating Hormone. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland found near your throat. This gland is only two inches in size but has a huge influence on your health. This hormone has a major role in regulating metabolism- the process by which body cells convert nutrients into energy.

WHAT ARE THE TWO TYPES OF THYROID HORMONAL IMBALANCE?

There are two main types of thyroid diseases –

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hyperthyroidism

These both have different sets of symptoms and problems associated with them. Let’s get a brief knowledge about these two thyroid diseases.

What is Hypothyroidism and its effects on the body?

In this problem, your thyroid gland can’t make enough hormones to function properly. Thyroid glands completely control your body’s metabolism. The slow production hormone results in very slow metabolism which further results in weight gain.

This type of thyroid imbalance is very common and most of the people who have thyroid issues suffer from hypothyroidism.

What are Hyperthyroidism and its symptoms?

As the name suggests, hyperthyroidism occurs when your body produces too much hormone i.s. thyroxine T4 and triiodothyronine T3.

You may feel symptoms like, fast heartbeat, increased appetite, high levels of anxiety and sensitivity to heat. One of the major symptoms of hyperthyroidism is Weight Loss.

HOW DOES THE TSH TEST WORK?

A thyroid-stimulating hormone test is used by health professionals to find out how well the thyroid is working.

A healthcare professional will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm, using a needle. A small amount of blood is collected in the test tube.

This sample is used to check the production of thyroid hormones in the blood. If the level of TSH is high it means you have hyperthyroidism and if the level is low, it indicates hypothyroidism.

If the level of hormone is right but you still have the symptoms of a thyroid problem then another three tests are performed namely- T3, T4 and Thyroid Antibody Test.

These all tests are performed at Lifecare Foundation Lab which is the best Pathology Lab in Derabassi. If you are also feeling the above-mentioned symptoms or you are already diagnosed with thyroid hormonal imbalance then a regular thyroid test is necessary to know if it is under control with the medication or not.
